Many of you already know how to take care of the skin and have developed a personal skincare regimen or do you make skincare mistakes. You know to use cleanser, toner and moisturizer everyday, you know to avoid smoking and squeezing the breakouts, you might also know that going to bed without washing your face is one of many common bad habits that can cause serious problems to your skin. However, there are some other skincare mistakes that many people are making all the time without realizing the damage these can cause to the skin. Check out the following 5 mistakes and see if you are making them. Avoid them now and your skin will thank you later.
Mistake No.1: You pile on the products
One of the most common mistakes that happen to almost everyone, especially those ones who like to experiment. You read reviews about a new treatment and you immediately think: I need that! The next thing you know is that you are bringing home loads of new toners, moisturisers, scrubs, creams and more. Switching to a series of new products raises the risk of irritating your skin so it’s important to check if the product is hypoallergenic before applying. Skincare experts also recommend 3 to 4 products for your daily skincare routine - cleanser, sunscreen, and a treatment-oriented product, like a moisturiser, acne treatment or anti-aging product. Constantly buying and trying different products may not only upset your skin but also waste you a lot of money and time.
Mistake No.2: You pick products that try to do too much
A product that can multitask can surely save you a lot of time. Who doesn’t want a magic product that can bring you clearer skin, fewer wrinkles, smaller pores, and ah, don’t forget the SPF! If it’s colored it can also work as a primer or foundation. The problem is that these one-for-all products usually can’t either live up to all of those claims or be too harsh for your skin. Sticking to products with fewer ingredients that are targeting a specific issue is a better way to go.
Mistake No.3: You put on products a little haphazardly
You should know the products you are using, including when to use them and how to use them. It actually matters which products you put on first, especially when layering products. The treatment-oriented products should always come first. For example, if you are using serum or any acne treatment, you should apply that before a basic moisturiser. Be careful and consult a skin expert before applying or combining any irritating ingredients, like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Some products that contain retinoids should only be used at night since they can make skin more sun sensitive.
Mistake No.4: You leave your makeup on at the gym
You might feel a bit nervous working out totally bared faced. It is understandable, but not really benefiting your skin. The combination of makeup and a sweat session will easily cause breakouts and your skin wont breathe well under foundation, no matter if it is mineral or not. Keep makeup removing wipes in your gym bag and you will benefit from this simple tip. Finally, if you have to, wear a very basic oil free tinted moisturiser, which is still better than leaving makeup on.
Mistake No.5: You skip a daily sunscreen
You must have heard a million times but many people are still doing it. We know the importance of applying sun screen on a bright sunny day but when it’s winter, we tend to forget. UVA remains the same amount all year around. Applying a daily sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher will give you significantly younger looking skin in the end.
