Fasting Can Boost Health and Increase Lifespan

We have been reading a lot about fasting and the healing it can provide for many troubled with weight-loss issues and endocrine imbalances. This article from Coherent News looks at the research a team at Harvard University has done on how fasting has the potential to increase a person’s lifespan.

"Scientists reveal how intermittent fasting can be good for health, according to a new study published in November 2017.

A team of researchers from Harvard University conducted a study that shows how fasting has the potential to increase a person’s lifespan.

“Although previous work has shown how intermittent fasting can slow ageing, we are only beginning to understand the underlying biology,” said William Mair, senior author on the study.

They found that fasting in this way could also improve overall health of the individual by altering the activity of mitochondrial networks within the cells of the body.

It was observed that restricted diets promote homeostasis in mitochondrial networks, which allows for a healthy plasticity between the two states of mitochondria, namely fused and fragmented states.

“Our work shows how crucial the plasticity of mitochondria networks is for the benefits of fasting. If we lock mitochondria in one state, we completely block the effects of fasting or dietary restriction on longevity,” said Mair.

The study also found that intermitted fasting also enhances mitochondrial coordination an organelle that speeds up fat metabolism.

Heather Weir, lead author of the study explained that, “Low-energy conditions such as dietary restriction and intermittent fasting have previously been shown to promote healthy aging. Understanding why this is the case is a crucial step toward being able to harness the benefits therapeutically.”

These findings provides researchers the opportunity to explore therapeutic strategies to help reduce the likelihood of developing age-related diseases as one grows old."
