Low Energy Levels: Causes & What You Can Do

At some point or another, you may have felt like your energy tanks seemed a little more empty than usual. Feeling like you just have to take a mid-afternoon nap, are having difficulty concentrating, or are generally feeling lousy is all too common for many people today.

Low energy levels are something that many people experience, but many people just accept lowered energy levels as a part of aging. In reality, you can have close to the same energy levels that you had in your youth by making small habit changes within your life.

Your perceived energy level has a lot to do with the choices you make on a daily basis. With many possible causes of lowered energy levels, there are a number of things you can do to help rejuvenate them.

Below is a closer look at the potential causes of lowered energy levels as well as the things you can do to try and remedy them.

Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important factors when it comes to fueling your day with energy and therefore a lack of sleep can lead to lower energy levels. Many people overlook sleep as a cause of lowered energy levels since they believe they are getting enough of it each day.

In reality, getting sleep is much more than simply lying in bed for seven to eight hours straight. Sleep quality plays a more integral role in feeling energized than time in bed alone. With that being said, according to the 2020 Sleep in America Poll, Americans are more likely to contribute their sleepiness to an inability to sleep well rather than not having enough time to sleep.

The concept of poor sleep quality is a common theme as it is widely known that as age increases sleep quality tends to decline. While this trend exists, it isn’t to say you are unable to achieve quality sleep as you get older, you just may need to put in a little extra effort in the right places.

Below is a look at some tips and tricks to help you get better quality sleep to achieve the perfect night's rest.

Train your circadian rhythm

Circadian rhythm is a term utilized to describe the internal clock that the body utilizes to perform many vital functions. One of those functions is regulating the sleep and wake cycle.

As the day passes, the brain will secrete adenosine and melatonin, and as they accumulate (especially when it gets dark), they help the body to know it’s time to rest and fall asleep. During sleep, adenosine and melatonin are removed and the process is started again, with another hormone called cortisol building as you sleep to help wake you up in the morning.

When your circadian rhythm is off it can lead to difficulty sleeping.

Historically, circadian rhythms were tied closely to the rising and setting of the sun, but thanks to technology this relationship is not as prevalent as people now stay up late with bright screens and artificial light helping to trick the mind to stay awake. As a consequence the brain can become thrown off and unable to attain quality sleep because it doesn’t know when it should anticipate going to sleep.

Training your circadian rhythm is about consistency with what time you wake up and when you go to bed. Keeping these factors consistent over time helps to train your circadian rhythm and eventually the body will be able to naturally learn when to anticipate sleeping and waking up.

Having an aligned circadian rhythm can work wonders to helping individuals fall asleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

Good sleep hygiene

Having good sleep hygiene consists of doing your best to control the variables surrounding sleep. This can be achieved by creating nighttime routines, making efforts to create an environment conducive to quality sleep, and having a morning routine.

Creating routines surrounding sleep is an excellent way to step up your sleep hygiene. With a nighttime routine, you should try your best to avoid bright screens and lights at least 30 minutes before bed and choose a relaxing activity to do. Doing both of these creates a relaxing environment for your mind to settle down which can give you a lower chance of lying in bed staring at the back of your eyelids with an alert mind.

A morning routine should consist of things that get you out of bed and exposed to a healthy dose of sunshine. Getting up and exposed to light can help you to get your day started and make you feel more awake.

The other aspect of good sleep hygiene is to create a good sleeping environment. Having a dark and quiet room free of distractions is the best environment for most people to sleep in. Even if it is difficult to get your room perfectly pitch black, you can always utilize an eye mask and some earplugs to help reduce the chances of something waking you up.

Without sleep interruptions, it can be much easier to attain quality sleep and feel more energized the next day.

CoQ10 deficiency

CoQ10 is an important molecule in the body. At a cellular level, CoQ10 is a molecule that the mitochondria utilize to help produce the energy molecule for the cell known as ATP. ATP is the basis for cellular energy and without it, cells cannot function.

While CoQ10 levels typically stay within a normal range, there are factors that can lead to its decline, which can subsequently reduce available ATP for cells. A reduction of energy at a cellular level can bear its head as a decrease in perceived energy level, mental fog, and even focus. Factors such as age, certain medications, and even genetics can contribute to low CoQ10 levels.

MitoQ

CoQ10 supplements exist, but a major downfall of many CoQ10 supplements is that they are typically poorly absorbed and implemented into the mitochondria. Standard CoQ10 is an uncharged particle which means it needs to be taken with food and even then it is only able to be absorbed so much since it is fat-soluble. Additionally, the uncharged CoQ10 molecule has a difficult time being implemented into the mitochondrial membrane where it acts to protect the mitochondria from oxidative damage and subsequent decline inefficiency.

This is where MitoQ comes in.

MitoQ is a modified form of CoQ10 that adds a positively charged ion known as lipophilic triphenylphosphonium. The addition of this molecule allows MitoQ to be many times more bioavailable to the mitochondria than standard CoQ10.

What this means is that not only is MitoQ but it also is able to get into the mitochondria’s membrane thanks to the positive charge. When taken for at least three months as directed, MitoQ has the potential to truly support optimal mitochondrial functioning.

Lifestyle

A large component of energy level is the choices made on a daily basis. It is no secret that exercising and eating well is good for your body, but it is also good for your ability to feel energized throughout the day.

When you underutilize your body, it doesn’t give it a reason to have high levels of energy and your body adapts. Sitting at a desk all day doesn’t require a lot of energy so when you actually need to go out and get a lot of things done it can seem like you get tired out faster.

Below is a closer look at aspects of your lifestyle you can modify to support healthier levels of energy.

Exercise

As stated, more and more people are adopting sedentary lifestyles, which can be incredibly detrimental to your energy levels. The human body is capable of so much and utilizing your body through physical exercise can be an effective way of increasing your perceived energy levels while simultaneously providing you with a whole list of other benefits.

A great method for improving your energy levels through exercise is to find some kind of physical activity that you find enjoyable and try to fit it into your schedule every day of the workweek. Having a level of consistency and enjoyment with your physical activity can make it easier to stick and maximize the energy boost that exercise can bring to your workday.

Food choices

The saying “you are what you eat” has more validity than most people realize. One of the best ways to think about food is to think of it as fuel. Eating low-quality and highly processed foods such as fast food is analogous to low-grade fuel but your body needs premium to run at its best.

Making a conscious effort to eat more quality whole foods in addition to a well-balanced diet can provide you with more energy throughout the day. Simple sugars and processed foods provide cheap and poor-quality nutrition and calories. Electing to eat a healthy diet can help you to increase your energy levels and simultaneously support your overall wellbeing.

Conclusion

Having low energy levels is something that can have a number of different causes. While most people will write low energy levels off as a simple part of aging, there are a number of actions you can take to help support a better level of energy.

Getting good quality sleep, supporting your energy at a cellular level, and making healthy lifestyle modifications can all help to elevate your general level of energy and allow you to do more with each new day.
